Duties

Supervises fire crew members and delivers wildland fuel management, prescribed fire and wildfire suppression services in support of field unit’s fire management program.

A secondary school diploma. NOTE: Proof of education must be submitted with application.

CIFFC approved Intermediate Wildland Fire Management Course or Type I Fire Crew Leader Course (copy of certification must be included with application).

Experience In: • Fire management operations related to fuel management, prescribed fire and/or fire suppression;• Working on the fire line;• Using and maintaining fire equipment;• Working in remote areas for extended periods;• Working in the forestry environment;• Supervision on the fire line.NOTE: The onus is on the candidate to submit an application that addresses directly the screening requirements of this process. The screening board cannot make assumptions about your experience.

KNOWLEDGE OF:• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other related Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) issues;• Fire management strategies and tactics for both wild land and prescribed fires;• Key techniques and practices related to weather prediction, map and photo interpretation and fire behaviour prediction.

ABILITY TO:• Maintain equipment in a state of readiness;• Deliver training to fire crew members;• Supervise staff while working under high stress;• Use a computer for recording and reporting incidents and/or accidents.

Operational Requirements:• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment; • Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial holidays, when required;• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation; • Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Maintenance of a valid driver’s license (class L, N, O, or other graduated license will not be accepted)• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks including:1. Occupational Health Assessment for firefighters; 2. Arduous fitness status as outlined in the Parks Canada Fire Management Workplace Fitness Capacity Test SOP; • Possession and maintenance of St John’s Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR certificate;• Certification for chain saw use;• Meet and maintain certified status for hover exit for light and intermediate helicopters.• Meet and maintain certified status for Class D heli-sling for light and intermediate helicopters.
