Are you a strategic thinker ready to roll up your sleeves? Looking for a place to demonstrate your strengths? Do you have the drive to carry challenging projects across the finish line? Find a career-defining role with Planning Branch, leading a project that will shape the future of this province’s environment. Alberta is committed to stabilizing, recovering and sustaining woodland caribou populations. As Caribou Range Planning Lead, you will lead the preparation of range plans for Alberta’s 15 caribou ranges that protect critical habitat by establishing management strategies to direct industrial and human development. Success is essential – the stakes for caribou, as well as public acceptance for development, are high.

Reporting to the Director, Planning System & Support, you will provide leadership and coordination in developing caribou range and action plans. Working with a cross-ministry team of professionals, you will ensure that:

• Aboriginal and stakeholder relationships are maintained through honest and honourable contact, aimed at truly understanding their perspective;

• Planning challenges are carefully explored through transparent and credible modeling and analysis

• Data, assumptions and approaches are grounded in science

• The social, environmental and economic impacts of different decisions are examined, and trade-offs understood

• Briefings and decision documents professionally present a complete, balanced assessment of benefits, risks and ramifications

• Ultimately, range plans are prepared that support caribou recovery and address federal recovery strategy requirements.

The position provides advice, coordination and consultation to interdepartmental teams and to a variety of stakeholders (conservation organizations, industry, landowners, resource users, universities, government agencies and departments, First Nations and Metis organizations and other key stakeholders) regarding the inclusion of critical habitat protection for sustaining caribou populations and outlining measures and steps to be taken to manage the interaction between human disturbance and natural disturbance in range management plans and policy. The Caribou Range Planning Lead is responsible for reporting on the effectiveness and achievement of the goals in the range plans and action plans.

Strong portfolio and project management skills are required to manage simultaneous and competing demands. An understanding of ecological and industrial landscape dynamics, sufficient to understand and inform modeling approaches, is essential. Exceptional communication skills are crucial, and experience working in contentious situations is an asset.
