Role

An exciting opportunity exists for an individual to play a critical role in the maintenance of forest health programs in the Peace River area. Reporting to the Forest Health Officer, you will conduct surveys to detect and evaluate the impact of insect pests and disease on forest stands that will assist in the development and execution of forest health management plans in the lower Peace Region. You will provide extension services to the public, municipalities and industries; develop and implement cooperative projects with industries and other government agencies; and perform other duties associated with implementing forest health projects. You will also support provincial pest emergency response teams for mountain pine beetle and alien invasive species, and assist with the operational delivery of components of Alberta’s Forest Protection Program. About Your Work Environment:

In this position, you will be operating out of an office setting in Peace River, though the majority of your time will be spent conducting field work in the area, including significant time participating in aerial surveys. Travel within the Peace Region and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities. You will have frequent contact with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and external stakeholders province-wide.

Qualifications

A diploma in Forestry or Natural Sciences with minimum of 4 years’ related experience, or a degree in Forestry or Natural Sciences with a minimum of 2 years’ related experience is required. Equivalencies will be considered. Experience in forest protection, resource management and some supervisory experience would be considered assets. Additional insect and disease courses are desirable. Eligibility for registration with the College of Alberta Professional Foresters, or the College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists, or the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists would be an asset. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.

Salary
